COMMON CAUSES OF DECREASED MILK SUPPLY                 
  • Skipped pumping/nursing sessions-less than 8 times a day
  • Long stretches more than 5-6 hours between pumping/breastfeeding
  • Incomplete pumping sessions less than 10 minutes per session
  • Use of a poor quality breast pump-not a hospital grade
  • Fatigue/stress/illness
  • Maternal weight loss greater than one pound per week
  • Returning to work
  • Use of birth control pills
  • Formula supplementation
TIPS FOR INCREASING YOUR MILK SUPPLY
  • Hold your baby skin to skin
  • Breastfeed/pump at least 8-10 times/day
  • Get more rest, go back to bed with your baby for 24 – 48 hrs
  • Drink plenty of water/juice and eat well
  • Seek to minimize stress
  • Fenugreek an herbal medication has been shown to help to increase milk supply
  • Contact your lactation consultant if not producing at least 500 ml(16 oz) per day by the
    end of the second week
