Pumping for Success
PUMPING FOR SUCCESS
- Sterilize your pump kit
- Wash your hands
- Help your milk flow or let-down before you begin pumping by massaging your breasts.
Many mothers massage each breast in sections while they are pumping to help drain all
areas of the breast.
- Drink some juice or water or eat a snack.
- Listen to some relaxing music/look at your baby or have a picture of your baby to look at.
- Set the suction on low and the speed of the pump to one. Center nipples in the flange of
the pump kit and turn on the pump.
- Gradually increase the speed to about the 4-5 level and increase the suction until you
feel a strong tug but not pain. If you feel sore at any point turn down the suction for the
next pumping session.
- Pump for about 15 minutes or 2 minutes after the milk stops flowing. Always double pump
it maintains/builds your supply better.
- Make sure you are latching your baby on or pumping at least 8-10 times a day. Try not
to go longer than a 5-6 hour stretch once a 24 hour period.
